SATAN
WAS A LADY (2001) 85 mins U.S.A. WRITER/DIRECTOR Doris Wishman, PRODUCER

THE LOW-DOWN
SATAN WAS A LADY is Doris Wishman’s twenty eighth feature in
a career spanning five decades of vehemently idiosyncratic
filmmaking. In this round, Wishman attacks; swinging and slashing to
reconfirm her title as Godmother of Motion Picture Pulp and,
pound-for-pound, the Baddest Director in the World. Amen!
Wishman’s plot rotates around the maneuverings of a whore who
longs for a touch of mink and a seat at the finer tables in life.
Blackmail, betrayal, murder and malice are all part of her tender
trade. Lord help anyone who lays in her way. Wishman is back, and
her footwork is as fine as ever. Can I get a witness?
Honey Lauren, lewd and lurid, busts out in the lead roll as
Cleo Irane, a lady of the underworld, driven by those mortal states
of lust, fear, madness and revenge, while exposing enough feminine
virtue to fairly render this harlot a martyr. Behold!
Glyn Styler, the New Orleans based crooner, was recruited to
punctuate the affair with his morbidly romantic lyrics; contributing
five titanic hits that have made him a favorite among misanthropes
and melody lovers nationwide. Styler and Coman pull off double duty
appearing in the rolls of Ed Baines the mercenary stickman – playing
all the angles and traps – and his silky smooth comrade the
unflappable Rene. These gentlemen know the score. Hallelujah!
Miami, the American Gomorrah, is the setting for this gothic
moderne, and home turf for the remainder of the cast, culled from
full-timers, first-timers, and free-lancers. Leading with his jaw,
is minor cult icon, Edge (Trans), as John King, the prime target.
Breaking a sweat with bruising body work is German born Adult Film
actor, Hans Lohl, as Brett King, love interest; whose best
combinations remain on the cutting room floor – too shocking – even
for the Wishman oeuvre. Repent!
Doris Wishman, now approaching eighty, continues to write
with the same fecund imagination and direct films with the brutal
naïveté that earned her legendary status. If you like sex kittens or
just kittens in general, you’ll knock yourself out over SATAN WAS A
LADY. Surrender!
